It is with deep sorrow that we, the Arizona Interfaith Movement, mourn the loss of Dr. Leland Fairbanks, a long-time supporter and champion of our cause. Dr. Fairbanks, who passed away on January 21, 2025, at the age of 94, was a remarkable physician and a tireless advocate for public health, calling himself the “old country doctor.” He brought common sense values to his practice and advocated health because of his love for people.
Dr. Fairbanks was a pioneer in the fight against tobacco, leading the charge for smoke-free policies across Arizona. His unwavering dedication to creating healthier environments was evident in his efforts to ban smoking in hospitals and public places. His work led to the implementation of the Smoke-Free Arizona Act in 2007, which has significantly reduced smoking rates in the state.
Beyond his public health achievements, Dr. Fairbanks was a steadfast supporter of the Arizona Interfaith Movement. His commitment to our mission of fostering understanding and cooperation among diverse faith communities was unwavering. He believed in the power of unity and worked tirelessly to bring people together for the greater good.
Anne Taylor of the Arizona Interfaith Movement observed, “Dr. Fairbanks was such a kind and compassionate husband to his wife, Eunice, of more than 68 years. She accompanied him constantly and he was so loving to her, heard her voice, then responded.”
Dr. Fairbanks’ legacy will continue to inspire us as we strive to create a more just and compassionate world. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those who were touched by his life and work. May his memory be a blessing, and may we honor his contributions by continuing the work he so passionately championed.
In 2011 Dr. Leland Fairbanks was honored at Arizona Interfaith Movement’s Golden Rule Banquet for being an health ambassador of the golden rule and his contributions in raising awareness of the dangers of second hand smoke.
