Mayor Giles started a Better Together in Service program at a Faith Leaders Breakfast a few years ago and involved the Faith Community for the valley. Willoughby went to work. She courageously fought for consensus because she knew that individuals with disabilities needed a voice. Despite opposition from her own party for a needed amendment, she said of these Arizonans with disabilities, "I choose you. I choose you as my hill to die on, I’m sorry this is happening to you. With my whole heart, I’m sorry.” She didn\'t give up and brought everyone to the table to solve this pressing time-sensitive issue. He is a man who does more during retirement than many do in an entire 30 year career. He doesn’t seek the spotlight, which is why I made a note to nominate him because at least those in the west valley owe him some gratitude and recognition. Curtis Nielson always has his ears open for who needs what and is quick to slip you the information you need, or to reach out and share specifically what he can do for you. He and his first wife, Sandy are the parents of 4 children. After Sandy died, he married Patti the mother of 5 children. All together they share 27 grand children! While most in retirement spend their time doting on their grandchildren, Curtis has shaped his life in such a way that he always is engaged in building the community where he lives and does a little doting of the grandchildren on the side. When I asked his wife to describe how or why he spends so much time serving others, she said, “He would say he has consecrated his life to the Lord and is here to serve His children.” Here is a list of some of his involvements in the community: - he served as an Avondale City Council member for 6 years and last year was elected vice mayor of Avondale. - A Littleton Elementary School Board Member for at least 4 years and was the president for one of them. Volunteer - He was a Girl Scout leader for many years with his first wife. Volunteer - A representative of the Municipal Water Board for multiple years. The board consists of 10 representatives from 10 cities. They discuss solutions for water in the valley. Volunteer - currently the President of the Lending Closet, a non profit that provides medical equipment for those in need for free. Volunteer - For 5 years he was a volunteer Family History Research Specialist. This means on the Family Search website, like Ancestry.com, he answered the phone requests for those needing assistance finding their ancestors through public records. He helped others find their roots! Volunteer - He was a bishop, twice, in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. All together 10 years of service, again, not paid, giving 15-20 hours a week on average to serve congregations of 350-500 parishioners. - Speaking of church service, he served a full time 2 year mission in Italy - He and his wife, Patti, are the Co Presidents of the JustServe organization in the Tolleson, Goodyear and Avondale areas. They populate the Just Serve website with organizations all over Arizona needing volunteers and connect the volunteers to those organizations - He and his wife help lead a Mobile Food Bank at their local church in partnership with St. Mary’s Food Bank. They sort and place food boxes for about 175 households monthly, even during the triple digit days of the summer. There he is in his 70’s sweating alongside everyone else out in a parking lot because people still need to eat in the summer. - for last year’s 9/11 National Day of Service, he and Patti coordinated over 100 volunteers to show up to Sleep in Heavenly Peace and assiste them in building and delivering 47 beds for west valley children who had been sleeping on the floor. He had men, women and children there all working together. He organized it with SHP’s local president. They are doing it again this year. - In his capacity as vice mayor, he co-chairs the Interfaith Partnership of Avondale, which meets monthly to discover and discuss the needs of the community that the local churches can help provide for. - He is the Representative for the city of Avondale at the city of Goodyear Interfaith Round Table, which also meets monthly for the same purpose. Who does all of this?? I came to know him 3 years ago when I moved to the area. The man is all over the west valley doing good. He is always at church on Sundays, always at every meeting for his civic commitments, and makes time for God and family. His career was as a metallurgical engineer and worked in the copper mines in smelting. I am in awe of all that he does in his ‘retirement’ and his faithful wife, Patti, is usually at his side, serving as well. He is so organized and even if he can’t remember a name in the moment, he’s the guy who will text you later with whatever name or number he thinks you needed. He LOVES the Lord and you can tell in his demeanor that he is a disciple of his faith. You can tell by the way he shows up and serves with all of his heart and mind that he reveres his fellowman. He loves shows respect to all types of people from all walks of life and faiths. He just serves and serves and keeps showing up with a smile and a new solution ready to be a part of the next project week after week! During his service in Vietnam, Bill was with the 1st Infantry, known as the Big Red 1, as a LRRP – long range reconnaissance patrol. Wildhorse, his military call sign and how he is known by many now, is a very humble person who doesn’t speak much of his service, instead he uses his experiences to serve his fellow Veterans and Active Duty service members as his way of paying it forward or paying it back. When complimented on his actions and what he has done and is doing, Bill will attribute all he has been able to achieve to the fact that he “has a very strong team” behind him that work together to make great things happen. Bill first became involved with Patriot Guard Riders in 2007 in upstate New York and in his and his wife, Judi’s travels has worked within PGR in many states and communities. His first mission with AZ PGR was in 2015, soon stepping into a role as a Ride Captain for Honor missions. While with AZPGR he was appointed to the position of State Help on the Homefront (HOTH) Coordinator and was instrumental to reviving and growing that program, as well as continuing his duties as a Ride Captain. In 2017, as State HOTH Coordinator, Bill developed the Yuletide 4 Heroes program – a Christmas adopt-a-family program providing gifts, a full ready-to-cook holiday meal, and even a tree with decorations if needed. This is a statewide program open to Active Duty military, Veterans, First Responders, and Law Enforcement, and is one of our most successful programs to date. As the program grew, so did our donation base and we have been fortunate to work with wonderful civic organizations, schools, and other Veteran organizations across the state. During this time, he also worked to bring awareness about AZ PGR and what we do, not only regarding our core mission of standing flaglines during Honors for our Fallen, but also services provided through our HOTH program. Bill became State Captain in late 2018 and has continued the legacy of Honor and Respect for our Fallen, but also for all of our service members past and present. Just to mention a few… For our Honor missions, Bill will engrave dog tags and bracelets to give to the family in memory of their Fallen family member. He is very active with our “22” raising awareness and providing resources for our service members at risk – even if it is him taking a call at 2:30 in the morning to ‘talk someone off the ledge’ or just be an ear to listen. He is also ordained and provides Chaplain duties for Honor services if requested by the family. And so very much more. After Bill assumed the role of State Captain, I was appointed as State HOTH Coordinator and have worked closely with him to grow and develop programs he began – and even begin or expand a few more. I have known Bill for 10 years, and he has been a wonderful friend and mentor. I can truly say Bill is an excellent example of someone living the golden rule. He was a Mesa police officer who was moving a latter off the freeway when he was hit by a car and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Although he forgot everything including his friends and family, his character of goodness, kindness and charity survived the accident. He was totally different yet still the same. He is also a military veteran. I think they have him doing something special in the military now and he has a non-profit called Archangels. He and his wife Rebecca are all about community service and the golden rule but they often act very quietly—never seeking praise. Brian, the owner of the business, hosts the Whitfill Garden Show, a 2 hour Saturday and Sunday morning radio show answering questions, helping and giving advice to all who call in. It is as entertaining as it is educational reaching many people each week on two radio stations. He has been on the air consistently for 35 years and I am an avid listener of both weekend shows. Brian takes every opportunity to promote kindness, good communication, respect, tolerance of different religions and different views and encouraging people to work together recognizing as he says “our differences make us stronger.” You experience this Golden Rule attitude throughout his show and at their nurseries and it just lifts people up. Affectionately referred to as "Mrs. White\'s," the business has stood the test of time. Through perseverance, hard work, and dedication to her craft, she has weathered many storms, including discrimination against African Americans and women. A divorced mother of five, she and the four youngest children moved to Phoenix in 1963 to help her brother Floyd Jimmerson in his restaurant and the church. She took over the restaurant after her brother moved. Bank loans for African Americans were difficult and for a Black woman in business, impossible in those days. Local activists Dr. Lincoln and Eleanor Ragsdale loaned her $500 through their loan company. Over the years the hearty soul food cooking at her Golden Rule Cafe attracted such legends as Sen. John McCain, Jesse Jackson, Alvan Adams, and Charles Barkley. She believes in feeding the body and the spirit and is an ordained pastor of Jesus, the Church of the Living God. Beverley was invited to participate in the first all women’s International Ocean Racing Team in 1980 in the Pan Am Clipper Cup series in Hawaii. Beverley\'s life has been richly blessed with love and spiritual guidance. In 1982, she married her husband, Stephen, in a large, joy-filled wedding officiated by Reverend and Mrs. Moon — figures she lovingly regards as her spiritual parents. Their influence and faith have remained a steady foundation throughout her life. Their son William was diagnosed with a brain tumor when he was 4 years old and he endured 7 years of treatment before passing away at age 11. During this time she and her husband experienced the most transformative time of their lives, challenging every aspect of parenthood and their relationship. Over this 7 year period during which Beverley describes as circumcision of the heart she gained a good dose of empathy. Other parents of children with cancer with the non-profit Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of S AZ came to their aid and demonstrated an unconditional love and support rarely seen. Numerous experiences led her to believe in the transformative power of love. When their son was offered a Make A Wish - his wish was to “Be with my Daddy” providing a real impetus to reflect on the health of their relationships and engage in couples and family therapy in an attempt to strengthen their relationships with each other and their children. Beverley joined the board of Candlelighters and has been the summer camp director for 30 years. Serving on the board for many years Beverley transitioned to program director in 2005 and has seen the organization grow annually. Childhood cancer is the number once cause of death by disease for children and as a parent being the best advocate one can be is important in the diagnosis, treatment and mitigating the long-term effects of childhood cancer’s impact on the family. Candlelighters supports, serves and advocates for children and adolescents with cancer, sickle cell and other blood disorders, their families, long term survivors and bereaved families. Their vision is to alleviate the isolation many families feel at the time their child is diagnosed. They offer programs that provide encouragement and understanding so that nobody will face the uncertain world of childhood cancer alone. Programs include summer camp, support groups, prom for teens, financial and holiday assistance and educational support. Beverley has discovered her greatest joy in serving others, particularly those walking the painful path she once did. Having chosen a road less traveled — one marked by vulnerability, courage, and compassion — she now offers support to parents facing the heart-wrenching diagnosis no one ever expects. Her strength lies not only in her experience, but in her willingness to walk alongside others in their darkest moments, offering light, empathy, and hope. She grew up with foster brothers and sisters and as an adult made it part of her life as well. Kelly has fostered over a dozen children, some of which had severe special needs. She’s one of those remarkable women who has given birth to biological children and a type of re-birth to not only those she fostered, but also adopted. Kelly is a strong woman of faith and her faith carried her through the difficulties of divorce. One of her commitments to herself and her God was to not speak ill of her former spouse. In that way she guided them through maintaining and improving their relationship with their biological father, even as she remarried. Kelly is not afraid of hard things. Two of her adopted sons who had severe special needs passed away in the last several years. When the first one, Ever, died, she grieved deeply as one would expect. But true to form, Kelly’s Christlike point of view and creative application was unexpected. She partnered with a close friend and dived deeper into serving her fellow man. Together they founded Cultivate Goodness. Cultivate Goodness is a non profit organization that bridged the gap between those who want to volunteer and those in need by providing a variety of service opportunities big and small. They focused on specific populations in Arizona including, those experiencing homelessness, veterans, cancer patients and more. One could not only volunteer service, or donate money, but also choose to host a drive or service that they executed. It was run all by volunteers so 100 % of donations went to the recipients. One of the unique characteristics of Cultivate Goodness was the invitation to join in a movement by logging one’s volunteer experiences on their website or social media outlets. She encouraged others to be mindful about ANY and all ‘good’ they were doing and celebrated them. They made building community bite-sized and fun! Their social media posts started a tidal wave of joyous photos of smiling people helping one another and sharing with each other. What a way to apply the sweet salve of service on one’s wounded heart. One of the characteristics Kelly embodies is a pure heart. She gives people the benefit of the doubt. You can see light and love in her eyes. She serves children, adults, and the elderly, even carving out personal time for one on one visits at local nursing homes or hospitals. She esteems all as a precious child of God. I hope you will give her every consideration for this award, as this is just a small piece of the many ways she serves the east valley community. I came to know him 3 years ago as the multi congregational leader in our church, called a ‘stake’ (as in tent stake) president. The term stake is used to evoke the image of a tent spread wide and being anchored by stakes. Stakes are congregations of believers who can anchor a community through faith and service, lending it strength. This position is not campaigned for, it is something one is called to by the high leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is not a paid position, It usually lasts for at least 7 years and involves a time commitment comparable to a part time job. He leads usually about 8 bishops and watches over the sacred tithes of the people, and sees that all are leading in line with the church’s general handbook. Tim Overton’s congregation is in a diverse area of west phoenix including parts of Phoenix, Tolleson, and Avondale. The first time I heard him speak to the greater congregation I was in awe that this polished lawyer spoke softly, humbly and simply to our congregation of diverse backgrounds. Ours is filled with black, white and Hispanics, some poor, some upper middle class and maybe none one would describe as wealthy. But Tim saw the wealth of faith and desire in everyone and as his wife describes, Tim is everyone’s ‘best’ friend! He makes special strides to leave the 99 and reach out to the 1. He touched my family, new to the area, when he made time and asked to meet with my husband and I and our son, a recently returned missionary who’d just had ankle surgery. We assumed he wanted to give some assignment and ask some service of us. He just wanted to get to know our son and make sure he was alright and feeling okay about his having to return home early for ankle surgery. We will always remember his parting words to our son, that even though he was not in formal service, he was still needed by God to ‘salt the earth.’ He spoke often the words of Jesus that we are the salt of the earth. He taught that meant that anywhere we went we could make it better, richer and be a blessing. He taught us that no act of kindness was too small or unnoticed. He treats everyone as an equal. His wife, Bethany, explained to me that one of his favorite scriptures is from the beatitudes, ‘blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God’. Unlike most people, he believes that means more than that the pure in heart will eventually see God’s face, he believes that it means if we purify our hearts, we will be able to see God in each person, TODAY. You can tell by the way he looks in to your eyes and listens to you that he continually looks at you as a fellow child of God and he finds a way or makes a way to assist people. Here are some examples of formal ways he does that: -served as Stake President in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints as a stake president for 9 years - served a 2 year mission for the Church just a year after becoming a member. - been a member of the Arizona Black Bar Association for years and served as president - served as an advisor on the AZ Governor’s Council for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion - serves 1 Saturday a month providing pro bono legal services for those who cannot afford to hire an attorney. He’s done the common type of volunteer work, like coaching his son’s basketball team for a few years. But he’s also used his talents and gifts to create ways to serve others. He played college basketball, and plays for fun to this day. I recently learned that for years, he has opened his local church building at 9 pm a couple nights a week for those who’d like a place to play some pick up basketball. Being the disciple of Christ that he is, he starts each one with a brief 5 minute devotional before the playing begins! He is always happy to feed people’s spirits. While my social media posts is limited viewing to friends only and consists of jokes, complaints, or family highlights, his is set to public viewing and is filled with spiritual insights, favorite verses, and testimony of the blessings of practiced living of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, with an occasional post about his family. What an example of letting one’s light shine! His recent posts include acknowledgement of the loss of Pope Francis to his catholic friends, a thank you to the others of the legal clinic at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church and reflections of the prayer of Reverend Benjamin Thomas of Tanner Chapel A.M.E. church in Phoenix that touched him. Tim Overton’s social media posts aren’t just copy and pasting or quoting, he shares WHY things touched him and HOW he applies what he learns. He is open about how Jesus’s teachings are reshaping and forming him. THIS is LEADERSHIP, not just in the hallways where he chooses to worship, but to the WORLD. He also wants to feed people’s bodies. He initiated and facilitated his church’s first Mobile Food Bank in partnership with St. Mary’s Food Bank. The last Friday of each month, His church brings food from the food bank to one of the church building. There the food is sorted and divided equally. People drive through the parking lot and volunteers load up the groceries in to their cars. They feed approx 175 households monthly. If there ever was a faith leader who showed how to treat others the way he would want to be treated, it’s Tim Overton. Felten The Fountains, a United Methodist Church President, Fountain Hills Interfaith Alliance A Valley mother of four and now a proud grandmother, Azra was born and brought up in Kuwait. In 1999, growing misinformation about and prejudice against the Muslim community inspired her to found the apolitical, non-profit, educational organization known as the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Arizona (ISBA). Azra has spent over three decades educating the community about Islam and Muslims. She trains speakers, plans and facilitates educational and creative interfaith events for ISBA, and works with Interfaith allies to sponsor events and respond to crises of religious prejudice in our community. As a speaker, she mainly presents on beliefs and practices, gender roles in Islam, and conducts Cultural Sensitivity Training for police departments, hospital personnel, educators, and corporations. She has been recognized for the effectiveness of her work with awards from both the Business community and the FBI. Her work includes providing interfaith opportunities to work together and learn from each other. Some of the creative interfaith programs that Azra has started are the ISBA Faith Tours, the 9/11 Multi-faith Food Drive, Movie & Discussion, and Springtime Tea Party. Had this been my single experience, I would not have considered her for this award, but several of her patients have unsolicited praised their doctor so highly, and then I discovered the doctor they referring to was also Dr. Rodriquez. This seems quite unusual and noteworthy. She does not discriminate with whom she treats with respect and kindness. I have never heard anyone say any negative comment about her including her support staff. They all like working for her as well. She also shares here knowledge at ASU Medical School as an Associate Professor. It is this type of behavior that needs to be recognized in the medical professional area. The act of treating staff, coworkers, and patients with such love, kindness, and respect is a quality that should be fostered in the medical profession as well as all other areas of life. I think Dr. Erlinda Rodriquez should receive this award for modeling these behaviors. Golden Rule Youth Award Karina Dwivedi, a high school student at BASIS Mesa in Mesa, Arizona, was recognized in May 2025 for her community service efforts. Specifically, she raised $700 worth of essential items for residents supported by House of Refuge AZ, a non-profit organization aiding families facing homelessness in Mesa. This initiative highlights her compassion, leadership, and dedication to supporting vulnerable community members. The effort was publicly acknowledged by House of Refuge AZ, emphasizing her role as a teen leader making a tangible difference in her community. Caroline Wu, a 6th grader at Arizona College Prep Middle School in Chandler. On May 7, 2025, she won the 2025 Be Kind Make A Difference National Essay Contest, as reported by azfamily.com. It is more than her namesake brand "Mrs. White\'s Golden Rule Cafe" -- on every occasion I have been privileged to be in her presence or in her business throughout the decades, she has exhibited kindness, concern for her community and an acknowledgement of God being central to her success. Her “Golden Rule Café” has been a foundational business in downtown Phoenix for decades and serves as an important venue for racial reconciliation, community empowerment, physical nourishment and spiritual renewal. Through their church, Christ Greenfield Lutheran, they helped to launch and now continue to grow the La Mesa Ministries program which feeds homeless communities of over 100 people every week at church campuses in Mesa and Tempe. Their program includes access to bus passes, financial classes, needed clothing and hygiene supplies in addition to providing a spiritual service. The home cooked meal is always offered first as a gesture of the love of Jesus who fed those who sought Him. Now Laurie and Rick are heading up an amazing endeavor to provide permanent housing to disabled members of the homeless community at Eden Village with property recently acquired in Mesa. Now returning to his roots in art, he uses sculpture and painting to inspire and uplift, including his current project honoring the late Senator John McCain.
