We are realizing that challenges like climate change and social fragmentation are both local and global. These issues affect people and the environment worldwide and also have a spiritual aspect. The Golden Rule, common to many religions and philosophies, offers a way to think about these challenges.
Inspired by Joan Holmes’ “Planetary Citizens Handbook,” AZIFM’s George Roundy proposed a Faith Forum. While many people see separation, planetary ethics encourage connection and awakening through being, love, and co-creation. Roundy introduced the topic and generously provided copies of the book to interested readers.
Peggy Schlesinger discussed how faith can promote intercultural harmony and global citizenship. Nicolas Mentha talked about how rapidly changing technology can enhance global understanding. Susan Weidner highlighted educational challenges important for developing competent and aware citizens. Dr. Paul Harasha, Chair of the MCC Cultural Science Department, moderated the discussion. The Forum was hosted by Mesa Community College and attended by faculty, students, and community members.
